Visiting Montreal
I've probably mentioned at least once the fact that I'm going to a conference in Montreal next week. The conference, Visible Evidence, looks fantastic, and my paper is slowly falling into shape. So here are my questions for you, dear readers. I've never been to Montreal and would love to know a few places that I absolutely should not miss. What restaurants would you recommend? What are the cool bars and cafes that I should check out? Any recommendations and suggestions would be much appeciated.

Chuck--They have a terrific cinematheque (the Quebecoise) which plays multiple old classic films each night of the week. But make sure you read the fine print about subtitles--French films are often shown unsubtitled. Have a great time, and best with the paper!

I'll try to check it out. I'll asmit that my French skills are very rusty. Usually I only speak enough French to get myself in trouble.

If you are a meat-eater: Au Pied du Cochon on Rue Hubert in the Plateau. Also, Schwartz's on St. Laurent for the smoked meat sandwich.
If you are a chocolate-eater: the just opened Suite 88 on St. Denis. A revelation. Say hi to Helene and Galit.
If you are a bagel-eater: St. Viatur on Mont-Royale.
Dive-y drinks: Barfly on St. Laurent.
And you must try the provincial snack: poutine. There's a good little spot on Rue Rachel around the corner from Parc la Fontaine. I forget the name, but they have a terrasse in the back.
Bonne chance!

Merci beaucoup! I'm in Montreal and really enjoying it. Hopefully I can manage to check out a few of these places on breaks from the conference....
