Tuesday Night Links

Fighting and/or recovering from a cold, so blogging may continue to be light for the next few days. I caught Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep the other night and very much liked it. Hoping to write a longer review later this week, but for now, check out Steven Shaviro's review essay on the film.

Via GreenCine: the news that Douglas Coupland (of Generation X and Microserfs fame) will be writing a new science-fiction series, Everything's Gone Green. And also via GreenCine, a pointer to David Bordwell's blog, which I've been meaning to follow for some time.

My favorite thing on Bordwell's site right now is not in the blog, but is that essay, "Hearing Voices," on Lady in the Water. I really should have posted and linked because there is so much for me to love in the essay: jabs at The New Yorker and the NYT, a defense of Lady in the Water, a discussion of New Journalism and this, which I think says so perfectly one of the things I was trying to say about the after the fact narration of In Cold Blood,

"This can lead to Robbe-Grilletian twists, as in the passage above: she reports De Palma’s thoughts about two people, naming them, but at the same time she says that he can’t recall their names."

So glad to have Steven Shaviro's blog on my radar now too. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip on "Hearing Voices." I'll add it to the long list of things I feel like I should read at some point!

Would love to hear your take on the Malcolm Gladwell New Yorker piece on "the formula," by the way.

Yeah, my slight but devoted readership has already been clamouring for a digest of that. I WAS trying to read I Am Charlotte Simmons in the evenings, but since it's awful maybe I'll just put it down and return to The New Yorker. And I'll link to your mention of the Gladwell thing too.
