What a horrible idea. And invoking the name of God is a surefire way to piss off a wide range of people in the world.

What if we spent $1 trillion to figure out how to better distribute food around the world, or how to reduce emissions from automobiles? Heck, what if we spent 1/1000th of that amount on either of these things?

Yes, I was thinking about the message that invoking the name of God might send to other countries.

Spending money on distributing food and reducing emissions? That's crazy talk. We can't have any of that in Bushworld.

Oh yah the US never does any good stuff.

If it were not for the US military putting boot to but from day one, there would be not more Jews on earth and we would all be speaking German.

The US is the only nation in the wold who after kicking someones ass, we help them to become an even more prosperous nation than they ever were. instead of taking over their nation.

Hell we gave Saddam another chance after the first gulf war, and he still defied the peace treaty.

Sammy, I don't remember saying anything about World War II, nor did I suggest that the US "never does any good stuff."

I was just suggesting that many nations, including some of our allies might feel threatened by weapons in space, that they might not see those weapons as "defensive," that calling those weapons "Rods from God" might seem a bit presumptuous. That's all I'm saying.

Ah, the classic Toby Keith theory of foreign policy:

1. Don't think.
2. Don't worry about the complicated nature of international relations.
3. Just put "boot to but."
4. Then complain that the people who resent this bullying behavior and respond with similar acts of violence hate our freedom.

The major problem with weaponizing space, is really, what do we need it for?
As of right now, the US is the only Superpower in the world, so much so that we've become a hyper-power. At least militarily. There is not another nation on earth that can seriously damage us before they become a historical footnote.
So why bother with something like this? Well, someone has to get paid. After all, a "GOD ROD" isn't an effective counter terrorism tool. But a previous poster suggested a fantastic anti- terrorism tool. Feed people. 30,000 kids die everyday from starvation. That's tiny children, who don't hate anybody, and probably don't care enough about anything besides their hunger and pain to hate anyone.
Maybe then we'll start denting terrorism and eliminate the need for these horrendous murdering things.
Anyone who's so cavalier about killing, picture you or someone you love in the dead man's shoes.

You all keep offering suggestions for spending one trillion dollars. Reducing emissions and feeding the world are the two offered alternatives to creating a space weapon. Since when is this country responsible for feeding the world? If starvation and emissions are your concerns, become a farmer, grow corn, make ethanol, ride a scooter, use horses to plow, and send excess corn to Africa.

Or in the alternative, remain nieve, think that hunger can be solved by pumping money into Africa (with no distribution networks), and believe that emissions will be reduced so long as corporations are allowed to donate money to politicians.

I think that the rods from god is a great idea, "they" (the people at Boeing and Lockheed-Martin would not make such a expensive weapons-system without knowning that it will work, but ofcourse there will be some setbacks in the devellopment.

You can probably do the same thing much more cheaply. Perhaps you can attach a rod to the end
of an ICBM and release it when the ICBM is in orbit. I read somewhere the American spent millions developing a pen that works in zero gravity, the Soviets just used pencils.

The ICBMs can also have a dual purpose, you can deliver food parcels and tents to remote communities in times of disaster. Perhaps the Bush administration should start research into using ICBMs for disaster releif, the rods from god can then be a possible spin-off application.
