Time Traveling with Aronofsky and Van Sant

I've been hearing buzz about two new potentially interesting time-travel films. First Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain is currently in production, with Hugh Jackman slated to star. Meanwhile, Elephant director Gus Van Sant is reportedly working to adapt Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife for the big screen. Not sure I have anything to add right now, but I'm already curious to see what these two directors will bring to the genre.

I can't wait for the Aronofsky film... This is certainly a different realm for him.

I hadn't heard about the van Sant movie. I find him a bit tedious at times, but sometimes it allows for some great subtle moments in his films (and I haven't seen Elephant... I totally forgot about it until you mentioned it, and it is now in my Netflix queue)...

I hadn't heard about the van Sant film... I find him a little tedious sometimes, but sometimes that leads to some really great subtle moments that otherwise wouldn't have been found. Incidentally, thanks for mentioning Elephant. I never got a chance to see it in the theatre, and I'd totally forgotten about it... I've got it in my Netflix queue now.

I'm looking forward to "The Fountain," too. Like you, I have mixed feelings about Van Sant, but I really enjoyed "Elephant."

I thought Gerry and Elephant were both fascinating. Though tedious at times, his slow, lingering style worked in contrast to the subject matter, which made for what I like to call a mood of "quiet chaos." I actually showed Gerry in an American Lit. and Film class recently (we were also reading sections of Walden) and the students were pretty receptive. The open ending of the film fostered quite a bit of discussion.

Thanks for the composition blog links, Chuck. They look very helpful.

I haven't seen Gerry but I will try to see it in the near future. With a mountain of grading hitting my desk in the next few days, I'll need some movie breaks along the way.
