Two

I almost forgot to mention that I've been blogging for two years now (here's my original blog). Sometimes that hardly seems possible, though on other days, it feels like I've been writing here forever. Usually when blog anniversaries or birthdays roll around, I spend some time digging in the archives, but this time, the rush of activity kept that from happening. Still, I'm finding that blogs provide a nice reminder of what I've been doing and where I've been over the past year. I like that autobiographical element a lot even if I don't talk very much about my personal life around here.

Like Mel, I've enjoyed the ways in which the blogging community has provided me with a space for thinking through some of my scholarly ideas (and sometimes even having those ideas challenged in productive ways). Or sometimes to have the blog function as a virtual water cooler where I can talk about everyday stuff like my favorite comfort movies. Thanks to everyone for your comments over the last two years and for your insightful blog posts that always interest and often challenge me.

Congratulations, and thanks for your blog! I read it daily, and have even gone to see (or rented) a number of movies after reading your thoughts...

One example was Everyday People -- I saw it at the movie rental store, read the description, and thought to myself, "gotta see this sometime soon". And then a week later I saw your best movies of 2004 post and you placed everyday people first! I rented it soon after that and LOVED it, shared it with friends and family too.

Keep 'em comin', i'm especially liking the thoughts about documentaries, but loving everything else too!

Congrats, Chuck!

I can never remember whether it's the asterisk or the ampersand that's supposed to be the traditional 2nd blogiversary gift, so:

Thanks for the kind words, Anjali. I'm glad you enjoyed Everyday People. It's sometimes difficult to know how the reviews are being received, especially when I'm writing about films many (most?) of my readers haven't seen.

Collin, I'd have guessed the 2nd blogoversary gift would be the "@" sign since it corresponds to the 2 on the keyboard, but asterisks and ampersands are cool, too....

I really liked the notion you put forward over at Mel's that blogworld is like a big party where you move from interesting conversation to interesting conversation. I think that's a great model, and it's certainly how I approach blogging these days. I can't keep track of all the conversations going on, not to mention participate in them, so just like at a party you just sort of flit in and out of conversations.

It's really been fascinating to see how the local blog community is organizing itself in response to its rapid growth.

Thanks, Jimbo, and I like the term "blogworld" much better than the awkward "blogosphere." And I think you're right to note the ways in which blogging communities form and re-form all the time. I'm always intrigued by people's blogrolls (especially new bloggers) and getting a sense of which conversations they find most appealing.

Congratulations, Chuck. Every once in a while I look at the growing number of months on my archives and start to think I've really accomplished something... then I start bopping around the blogworld and realize that I'm still just a baby.

Way to go... Two years is more commitment than I've shown just about anything in my life! :)

I'm not sure whether it's "commitment" or "addiction" in my case....
