Movies Under the Stars

Also via Green Cine, this fascinating collection of newspapers advertisements for Wisconsin drive-in movie theaters, many of which date back to the 1940s. It's a great collection, not just for the films that are being advertised, but also (and possibly more importantly) for the "lost" culture of drive-in movie theaters found in these ads (originally via Rashomon).

That is a great collection, but don't you think it's weird how they fetishize the original newspaper (no microfilms used)? But then they digitize the ads and put them up on a website, as if these images are somehow more authentic for being digitizations than the images placed on microfilm.

I just find this particular claim to authenticty particularly bizarre, but whatever...

You know, I thought that desire to convey authenticity was a bit strange, but then I just liked looking at the pictures....
