Madstone Closes
This is a real bummer. One of my favorite movie theaters in Atlanta, the Madstone (note the lack of an Atlanta link on the home page), is closing. It was quite a trek for me to go all the way OTP (outside the perimeter for non-locals), but the theater itself was great, especially in its methods for creating a nice atmosphere for viewing good movies. The wine and beer selections helped to create a wonderful leisure experience. I'll definitely miss it.
Equally distressing, according to the Creative Loafing article (which I can't seem to find online), Landmark Theaters, which owns the Midtown 8 Art Theater, is also undergoing a shake-up. I'd really hate to see any changes there. They've had an incredible run of good movies lately.

Where was the Madstone? We used to live in Atlanta, but I don't remember it. Of course, we didn't venture OTP very often. We were walking distance from the Plaza (now gone?), and a quick hop to a bunch of others (now Landmarked, no doubt). But if there was a great moviehouse OTP, I can't believe we hadn't heard of it.

It was in the Parkside shopping center in Sandy Springs about 1 mile north of the Perimeter on Roswell Rd. I think the location was a major problem for the theater because you couldn't actually see it from Roswell Rd. The Mastone had only been in operation for about a year, so it was relatively new.
The Plaza is still in business, but because of the extra art house films, they have been showing more mainstream stuff (Troy, etc). Hoping that'll change now that the Madstone has closed. The Plaza is probably the closest theater to my apartment...

We ventured so rarely OTP that I can't even picture the area (although I do have vague memories of Roswell Road). I'm glad the Plaza's still open, even if it's all LCDed now. Ah, Atlanta.

I'm still pretty happy with the film scene here in Atlanta, especially after living in some smallish cities in the midwest. In retrospect, the Madstone may have been the victim of other mistakes by the company that have little to do with Atlanta. but the theater was still in an awful location...
What do you mean by "LCDed"?
