You Went From Totally Geek...

..to totally chic. According to this opinion piece in the Georgia Tech newspaper, weblogs aren't so geeky anymore. It's actually a pretty amusing little editorial about the rising popularity of blogs, and the author mentions the fact that the paper is considering setting up blogs for the newspaper's writers. My class even warranted a brief, albeit anonymous, mention. Money quote:

For example, a couple months ago, the Technique ran an article about how LCC professors were using weblogging in freshman English classes. Having to keep a weblog for a grade might take away from the fun of it, but I for one would definitely rather have kept a blog for English than write a 10-page paper on, say, Frankenstein and the human condition.
Now, of course I do require students to write papers, although I probably wouldn't accept a ten-page paper on Frankenstein and the human conidition, unless it was this Frankenstein.

I wonder if I can convince a law professor to grade me on a blog, rather than an exam.

The non-geeky, populist AJC has started featuring local bloggers at this page. God knows how they found my blog--perhaps through atlantablogs.com. Anyway they say "If you would like to have your blog considered for inclusion, e-mail the link to: issue@ajc.com with the word 'Highlight' in the subject line." So Chuck and Jen, you could try e-mailing them.

Chris: I've been unimpressed by their political blogger, but they have been trying to jump into the whole blogging game. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm submitting my blog as I type this comment.

Jen: Good luck on finding a law professor willing to grade you on a blog!

Posted by: chuck at June 2, 2004 3:27 PM

Chris, Well I guess that means I would no longer be able to post about how the AJC sucks.

Posted by: Jen at June 2, 2004 8:42 PM

Hmm...you know, I thought about that as soon as I dissed the "political blogger" in my previous comment. Maybe I should have held my tongue....

I'm not sure what to make of the AJC's sudden blogging fetish. As if my pirate theme and constant Cox-bashing wasn't enough to disqualify me from their list, a quick search reveals I've dropped F-bombs in 21 different posts since Dec. 2003.

Posted by: Rusty at June 2, 2004 9:56 PM

Oh, I forgot about that...I've submitted my blog, but with that recent entry on mind-f*** films, they might not link to it...

Yes, it's interesting to see their sudden "blogging fetish." I won't try to guess their motivation beyond the obvious attempt to establish a stronger online presence, but I'm willing to ride that interest if it will bring a little more attention to my humble blog.

Well at least none of us were discussing our sorid sex lives, ala Washingtonienne style.

Posted by: Jen at June 2, 2004 11:53 PM

Oh, Chris, I just got an email from the AJC. I think my shameless self-promotion led to your blog being taken off the "Highlight" page...

Posted by: chuck at June 3, 2004 9:36 AM

A good gauge might be...
If your blog was an album, and you dropped enough profanity to earn it a "Parental Advisory" sticker, you probably have disqualified yourself from a link on their site. I hope for their sake that one random F-bomb, used in an intellectually justifiable context like the one you used, isn't enough for them to shy away from links. My potty mouth doubtless disqualifies me, even if I applied a boring "serious" theme to my site (there's a post on my site titled "S---eating c---sucking ratf---ing asshats").

No good deed goes unpunished :(

Posted by: Chris at June 3, 2004 12:46 PM

And Jen, I was referring to Atlanta Desk not Prison Notebooks.

Posted by: Chris at June 3, 2004 12:47 PM

Chris, I figured as much.. but I haven't been updating it as much as I used to.. so I didn't want to submit it. But, since I just spent waaay too much time typing in State House districts, I emailed it to the AJC. Let's hope I bump off Chuck ;)

Posted by: Jen at June 3, 2004 1:53 PM

I'm actually curious to see if I get a bump in the number of visits to my site today...I'm not sure if I'll be able to trace any clear correlation with the AJC link, but we'll see if I gain anything from my shameless self-promotion...

I got about 10-15 extra hits a day. Now I'm back to the usual crowd who are looking for information on the celebrity Chris Martin. (At least I'm not named Michael Bolton.)

Posted by: Chris at June 3, 2004 4:01 PM

No superfamous Chuck Tryons yet, although I wouldn't be surprised if I get a few hits from people looking for two other Chuck Tryons: one who is a fly fisherman from Missouri and another who is a fantasy writer. Right now, I have pagerank on them, though...

Within Atlanta itself, I have to compete against the principal trumpet of the Atlanta symphony. Have a look at
http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~mmoor02/chrismartin.html
and you'll notice that he works for artistic director Michael Moore.

Speaking of names, did you know there's an Annie Hall and a John Lennon at Emory? And if you were to guess which departments they worked in, you'd be correct--film and music.
