Thirty Minutes to Tip-Off

The big game starts in just a few minutes. Not sure how much energy I'll have to blog the game. My allergies are hitting me hard today, so we'll see how things go. To be honest, I wasn't much of Tech fan growing up. I usually cheered for that other school down the road. But for tonight, I'm a rambling wreck from Georgia Tech.

It has been interesting to watch the police build-up for the game. They've basically sealed off campus, which is difficult to do in the middle of downtown Atlanta. They've been closing off all the roads into campus, and only Tech students, faculty, and staff are allowed on campus tonight. But with the recent history of college students rioting after basketball championships it makes sense. Apparently there were some serious riots at University of Maryland last year, and Purdue used to have a terrible problem with rioting every basketball season.

So, now it's just about game time (I'm a slow typist). I'll try to check back from time to time, but for now, go Jackets!

Okay, so the introductory sequence seemed a little goofy to me, with players from both teams reading off cliched lines about "making history" and "images that will last forever."

Wow--neither of the talking heads are giving Tech a chance in this game. I'm not *that* surprised, but come on, the Jackets beat UConn by 20 points earlier this year. What's up with that?

Okay, that line before the timeout, "Huskies establish the dress code early so far. No Jackets, no ties." That guy's been practicing that one all week, hasn't he.

Good game so far, if a little sloppy. Looks like B.J. Elder might be finding his range.

Two bad calls against Tech already! The call against Schenscher was just wrong!

Posted by: chuck at April 5, 2004 9:40 PM

Uh oh... Tech's down by twelve. They're starting to play panicked. This isn't looking good.

Two quick fouls on UConn's Ben Gordon. That helps a little (if Tech'd make their &*^% free throws). A couple of good defensive plays by Theodis Tarver helped, too.

Ouch! UConn hits a shot at the buzzer, taking a 15 point lead against Tech. Still, there's no possible way that Tech could shoot any worse in the second half. Is there? 4 out of 12 from the foul line?

I want to support you in your real-time blogging of this game, but what I know about sports would not fill the thimble of a small-fingered seamstress.

Instead, I'll just say that I once took a P.E. class at Georgia Tech with then-GT basketball star Mark Price.

I'm taller than he is.

Understatement of the night: Yellow Jackets fall behind by 21 and Billy Packer says, "Georgia Tech in real trouble now." Oh, really?

Posted by: chuck at April 5, 2004 10:44 PM

*I* might be taller than Mark Price! If I remember corretly, he was listed at 5'10", but rumors had him really being about 5'8". Anyway, there's not much to blog about. Some of Tech's key players are just having bad nights.

UConn's up by 18 with around ten minutes to play. Guess I'll stick with the game to the bitter end, but it's pretty much over. UConn's Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor are just incredible players.

Okay, I've been seeing these advertisements for the Brad Pitt movie, "Troy," in which Pitt seems to be playing Achilles. Does anyone else think this is a bad idea?

Posted by: chuck at April 5, 2004 11:17 PM

Yes.

Just wanted to make sure that I'm not completely out of touch. After all, I'm *supposed* to like literary stuff. But it looks like a studio executive's lame attempt at recapturing LOTR's literary cred.

UConn 82. GaTech 73. At least the Jackets made it a game at the end. Wish they'd been smarter about fouling UConn a little earlier.

Maybe next year.

Okay, so I'm a bit late to the party. I'm just wondering, though, George, is your role in sports-event blogging bringing the small-fingered seamstress line? Witness: http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/po/archive/000222.php

I *knew* I'd heard George use that line before. Too bad blogging the big game didn't bring Tech the same luck it brought LSU.

I think Tech will be even better next year if all their underclassmen return, which doesn't guarantee a return to the championship, but should mean an exciting season.

Rats! I've been found out!
