Dirty Trackback Tricks

Like everyone else, I've received my share of comment spam, most of which gets zapped by the MT blacklist, but tonight I noticed that I've been getting trackback spam, calling card companies that have been linking to my site for no apparent reason.

I assume this helps their page rank in some way, which annoys me just a little. I also can't figure out where on their page they've linked to my site. Is there anything I can do to short circuit what they're doing, just because I don't really want some calling card company to profit off linking to my blog?

I was thinking it was only a matter of time before they started doing this. They don't have to create a link to your site to hit you with a trackback, though. I'm not sure how to prevent this sort of thing.

Having just installed MTBlacklist on my teaching blog pages, I've learned that MTBlacklist is designed to block TrackBack spam, too. The calling card companies were probably just not on the list of blocked spam, yet.

Good to know about the Blacklist...Reading MetaFilter this morning, I learned that several presidential campaigns are "using" referrer log spam now (more likely, it's an overzealous supporter giving the campaign a bad rep).

A page dedicated to a certain hotel-chain heiress' "performance art video" has been showing up in my referrer pages, too.
