Recommendation Letter Checklist
Matt offers a handy checklist for his students who have requested or will request recommendation letters. I've written a few recommendations in my very short career, and this is the information that I generally try to pass along to my students. The last point--letting me know how things turn out--is pretty important to me. Some of the letters I've written have supported students who were quite successful (which in all likelihood is not related to my letter writing skills), and it's always satisfying to hear the good news.
In other news, I can't stand the Cubs.

Yeah, I can't stand them either but 95 years is a long time to wait so I can't begrudge them that...

If we're pulling for teams that have been waiting for a long time, I'll take the Red Sox. When I lived near Chicago, I rooted for the White Sox because the Cubs seemed to have a monopoly on that whole "Lovable Loser" phenomenon (which rubs me the wrong way for some reason).
The Braves' torture of their fans is far more refined, in some ways. They leave us on the hook just long enough every year only to fall apart at some point in the playoffs....
